Walker Art Center

The Walker Art Center, originally designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes (opened 1971), was dramatically expanded in 2005 by Herzog & de Meuron, marking their first U.S. project. From an architect’s perspective, the addition introduces a sculptural aluminum-mesh tower housing a theater, restaurant, and gallery, seamlessly weaving public “town square” spaces via glazed connecting halls into the original minimalist brick box. It masterfully contrasts, engages, and revitalizes the existing structure and urban context. From a photographer’s lens, the interplay of reflective aluminum, transparent glass, and textural brick crafts dramatic light and shadow compositions. Moments like the vibrant yellow vestibule and landscaped rooftop introduce dynamic frames, color pops, and layered perspectives.
